MultiSelect is a psychological diagnostic method for supporting HR processes in an organisation, especially in the following areas:

  • recruitment and selection
  • career path development
  • building the reserve staff
  • developing and implementing training policies for specialists and graduates.

Since 2003 the modified version of the test has been used as a primary recruitment procedure for the Polish police service. (SYNAPS and MultiSelect-R)

Structure

MultiSelect consisted of several different methods for collecting data, which rendered the results more reliable. The applied methods together formed a battery of tests which made it possible to collect different types of information. The information used in the system came from the following sources:

  • psychological data obtained from simulation-type tasks, where the testee is given a choice relevant in many situations,
  • psychological data obtained from cognitive ability tasks – the tasks are devised to test selected basic abilities related to cognitive functioning,
  • psychological data obtained from questionnaires
  • qualitative data obtained from personal contact with the candidate during an interview.

Functions

1. Job descriptions or descriptions of types of work that are encountered in organisations. The description process encompassed two levels:

  • functional – as a general characteristic of a post from the point of view of the organisational structure,
  • competency-basedas a characteristic of psycho-social competencies relevant from the point of view of the job.

2. Assessment

3. Alignment, which involves verifying the extent to which the predetermined criteria are consistent with the competency structure of the candidate or candidates.

4. Selection of candidate or candidates whose competency structures are most consistent with the predetermined criteria. The selection may be based on profile comparison or on the comparison of synthetic numerical indicators.

The MultiSelect system enabled the creation of candidate ranking lists for specific jobs with predetermined descriptions. The profiles of candidates “proposed” by the system could be then segmented and compared.
