Aim:

Designing and realisation of the system for supporting the psychological assessment of police drivers, including the drivers of emergency vehicles which will enable the Police to carry out the legally-required psychological assessment in accordance with the law.

Achieved results:

The end effect of the project is a computer platform allowing for carrying out legally-required psychological assessment of drivers complete with a set of psychometric tests and relevant documents. The system uses touch screens and does not require any other devices.

The system comprises:

  • The PolDrive computer platform

  • The battery of psychological tests implemented to the system for supporting driver assessment, including the drivers of emergency vehicles. The battery comprises the following tests:
  • Simple reaction time test
  • Choice reaction time test
  • Hand-eye coordination test
  • Two-dimensional hand-eye coordination test
  • Traffic-related intelligence test
  • Perception and attention test
  • Anticipation test
  • Personality questionnaire

Potential benefits from the implementation:

Enhanced occupational safety of the emergency vehicles drivers due to the selection of appropriate persons

Drivers of emergency vehicles must meet stricter criteria than all the other drivers. While driving an emergency vehicle he must quickly see, understand and anticipate the situations on the road. The vehicle is equipped with systems operated by the driver, which requires divided executive attention.

Driving an emergency vehicle entails taking risks. It is often the case that the risk is excessive or unnecessary in a given situation.

More effective HR management

Having the information on the level of required abilities it is possible make the selection process more effective by choosing the suitable officers for the tasks requiring more than minimal skills necessary for gaining the qualification.

Identifying the reasons for road incidents with the participation of officers

Collecting data concerning all police drivers in a single database allows for carrying out research and analyses which may lead to identification and monitoring the reasons for road incidents in which officers were involved.

  • carrying out psychological assessment of drivers in accordance with the law.

  • monitoring the reasons for road accidents in which police drivers were involved
  • identification of external criteria increasing the risk of road accidents

Scope of responsibility of the ALTA team:

The psychological aspect:

  • devising a theoretical model of a driver
  • developing the theoretical assumptions for the diagnostic procedures, defining areas and variables
  • developing tools:
    • psychometric tests for intellectual and cognitive ability assessment
    • questionnaires for assessing personality
  • developing criteria for pilot and validation studies
  • psychometric analysis of the results, also according to the IRT method
  • developing conclusions, norms and a handbook for users
  • developing a training programme for users

The technological aspect:

Designing the Internet/intranet platform and implementing the psychological tests onto the platform. The platform functionality allows for the use of diagnostic tools (e.g. conducting the test, calculating scores, generating reports, recording data) as well as managing their application (e.g. managing the testees or the results).

Preparing technical documentation and users’ manual.
